It was a long time coming — Adele Springsteen had been battling Alzheimer's for well over a decade — but it still came as a blow to hear about the passing of the Springsteen community's matriarch this past Thursday.
As Jon Pareles wrote in his New York Times column (link below), "anyone who’s ever shouted along on a chorus with an arena full of Springsteen fans — those choruses that often break through the darker thoughts in the verses — clearly owes Adele Springsteen some thanks." Or maybe even a lot.

New York Times: "The Mother Who Gave Springsteen His Rock ’n’ Roll Spirit" (paywall removed)
Associated Press: "Bruce Springsteen’s mother Adele Springsteen, a fan favorite who danced at his shows, dies at 98"
Asbury Park Press: "Obituary for Bruce Springsteen mom: Find yourself a little rock 'n' roll bar and dance"
Today: "Bruce Springsteen's mom dies at 98. Here's what he's shared about her struggle with Alzheimer's"
Legacy.com obituary: "Adele Springsteen (1925–2024), Bruce Springsteen’s mother"
